Background
Dr. Rogena Johnson is a Family Medicine physician with overseas experience and a strong public health perspective. She earned her MD and completed her residency at The University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas. Dr. Johnson’s past teaching roles include a pre-medicine student shadowing of her during private practice, supervisor of her inpatient care team during residency, and resident preceptor for students throughout their first two years in medical school. Dr. Johnson has a strong background in research, including her study in 2008 to improve rates of HPV vaccination and public health awareness of cervical cancer in her community. She has also researched ways to identify patients at risk for osteoporosis. Prior to starting medical school she worked in a biological science laboratory at the medical school that is at the forefront of research regarding cochlear regeneration techniques that would allow certain forms of hearing loss to be restored.
In 2005, Dr. Johnson completed a clerkship in General Surgery in Zanzibar, Tanzania – an experience that was pivotal in her decision to become a Family Medicine physician. It was during that time, when working with patients that were truly at risk and whom had little access to healthcare, but were genuinely grateful for any help they could get, that she realized she had to be able to take care of most any issue a patient might have. Thus she decided to go into Family Medicine so that she would learn every aspect of caring for a patient and their family.
Dr. Johnson has remained involved with her professional community, and has delivered presentations like “Lead Toxicity in an Adult Patient” at the University of Kansas Hospital Hematology Grand Rounds. Her publications include a chapter on anemia for "Signs and Symptoms in Family Medicine", an Elsevier textbook for medical students. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians as well as the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.
Her many awards for her compassion and devotion include the "G.O. Proud Student Research Fellowship Award" for Otolaryngology research from the University of Kansas Hospital ENT department in 2002, nomination for the "2012 Treasure Coast Physician Excellence Award" as well as the "2012 Patients' Choice Award" from the online consumer research organization PatientsChoice.org. She is a HealthGrades.com recognized physician and has been on their honor roll since 2010.
